back to the future
when i look at the two of you it is apparent
(at least to me)
that one of you is looking forward and
one is looking back.
as is true
(i suppose)
it is the one that is outgoing and gregarious
that looks hopefully to the uncertainty of the future and
it is the one that is introverted and retrospective
that looks longingly for the comfort of the past.
at eight i look forward to seeing the
type of adult you will turn into
(twenty years from now)
at eleven i often wonder what
type of adult you would have been
(twenty years ago).
the lead-by-example stargazer and
the take-it-all-in old soul
and what is funny is that although you seem to have
a grasp on these eras
neither of you has been there
(yet).
(at least to me)
that one of you is looking forward and
one is looking back.
as is true

it is the one that is outgoing and gregarious
that looks hopefully to the uncertainty of the future and
it is the one that is introverted and retrospective

I thought of my niece and nephew when I read this. One is outgoing, the other reserved. Another great poem.
Infant Joy
(1)
'I have no name;
I am but two days old.
What shall I call thee?
'I happy am,
Joy is my name.
Sweet joy befall thee!
(2)
Pretty Joy!
Sweet Joy, but two days old.
Sweet Joy I call thee:
Thou dost smile,
I sing the while,
Sweet joy befall thee!
